Roblox dropped on September 1, 2006. That's the official launch date when regular people could finally play it.

But here's the thing - it wasn't called Roblox at first.

The whole project started in 2004 as "DynaBlocks." Yeah, terrible name. They changed it to Roblox in 2005. Smart move.

And get this - Roblox Studio came out the same year as the platform. So from day one, kids could build their own games. That's why it blew up.

The first games were basic. We're talking:

  • Paintball arenas
  • Haunted houses
  • Trains you could ride
  • Obstacle courses

Nothing fancy. But that was the point.

I remember when Roblox had maybe 100 concurrent players. Now it's got millions online at once. The early days were wild: no moderation, barely any rules. Parents today worry if Roblox is safe for kids, and honestly, they should've worried back then too.

What made Roblox different? It launched when YouTube was just starting. Kids could make games AND show them off online. Perfect timing.

The beta actually ran from 2005 to 2006. Only invited users could join. Then September 1st hit and boom: anyone could sign up.

Fun fact: The first ever Roblox user was "Admin" (shocker). The first real player was probably "qa" or "john." They're still around.

So yeah, September 1, 2006 is when Roblox officially came out. But the real story started two years earlier when two guys thought "what if LEGO but online?"
